Abstract: This research report has the aim to study the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR). The CDR are the first product of the social pro-independence movement in Catalonia, that outlines and applies action and resistance methods based on nonviolence strategies. This tool of protest and social change generated a public debate about the pacific and non-violent character of the CDR. Through an accurate analysis on the action methods of the CDR, a theoretical approach on the concept of nonviolence and a practical study on two Committees, this research concludes that the Committees for the Defence of the Republic significantly act in a non-violent way and that some of their action and resistance methods could be framed within the nonviolence logic.
