Abstract: | Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract that together involve a pathological spectrum called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are characterized by being immune-mediated, inflammatory and chronic diseases, which evolve in outbreaks and periods of remission. Its etiology is not yet clear, but the most accepted hypothesis estimates that it includes an interaction between the genetic susceptibility of the host, an altered immune response and the resident enteric microorganisms (intestinal microbiota). This advance in the knowledge of the pathogenesis of IBD has boost numerous investigations on the possible modulation of intestinal microbiota through the use of probiotics in the treatment of these pathologies. |
