Abstract: Basse is an administrative division of Gambia with chronic children malnutrition problems. Establishing the local relationship between food security indices and child nutrition is necessary in order to be able to design an adequate intervention, aimed at modifying those aspects of food security that are most closely related to malnutrition. Methods: A search for data on modifiable food safety indices related to the Basse area was conducted, and its possible relationship with the stunting indicator (an indicator of children chronic malnutrition) was studied. Data on the stunting indicator published for the Basse region through several periods of time was obtained. Only two food security indices with more than one time register value for Basse were identified: the Food Consumption Score (FCS) and the Consolidate Approach to Reporting Indicators of Food Insecurity (CARI). A correlation could not be confirmed between the food safety indices FCS and CARI and the prevalence of stunting in Basse due to lack of sufficient data. From these two available and potentially modifiable by intervention indices, the FCS appears to be the most appropriate for the Basse region, although the data is very limited. In order to be able to design accurate interventions aimed at improving the chronic malnutrition situation in Basse it is necessary to generate more data on the validity and suitability of the different food security indices in the area.
