Abstract: This paper describes how dumping practices in Roman times followed a general behaviour, which did not differ much from other complex societies. Despite the lack ofliterary sources about laws implemented in the Roman towns to prevent any citizen leaving rubbish in the public areas, patterns of pottery distribution constitute an alternative source of information. Pottery distributions, aboye all amphorae, provide sorne hints on how Roman inhabitants chose their dumping zones so as to avoid disturbing urban harmony.
