Abstract: Cooperative vehicular applications have reliability and latency requirements which are difficult to achieve using the current 802.11p standard and fixed Beaconing approaches. This is mainly since, in certain traffic situations, congestion occurs in the communication channel causing collisions and delays in the reception of the transmitted packets. In order to meet the high requirements of vehicle applications, adaptive Beaconing approaches have recently been proposed, their aim is to modify certain transmission parameters dynamically, considering different criteria, such as the traffic situation. An application that uses V2X communications is Platooning. This application consists of forming groups of vehicles that exchange beacons at a high frequency and its main target is to improve traffic safety and efficiency. In situations of high traffic density, it is possible that this application does not meet the performance requirements due to the congestion of the communication channel and, therefore, this is a clear example in which the use of adaptive Beaconing approaches is needed. Therefore, in this work a study of the Beaconing approaches is carried out, as well as an analysis of different scenarios in which the Platooning application itself is included and based on simulations, the impact of some communication parameters in the performance of the system. In conclusion, the shortcomings that currently exist in the fixed Beaconing approaches are demonstrated and could be solved using this type of adaptive approaches.
