Abstract: | The Broken Windows Theory, introduced by Kelling and Wilson (1982), is one of the most important theories in the Criminology field. This theory established a relationship between the urban decay and the crime rate, but the manner in which was implemented in New York, through an order maintenance police, has caused opposing views. The aim of the present study is to analyze the implementation of this theory in New York and other cities in the USA during the 90¿s and the consequences that this caused to society. A bibliographic review from different scientific articles, for and against the broken windows policing has been used as a method. This study concludes that the Broken Windows policing caused more problems than advantatges to society and the concept of "disorder", orginally introduced by the authors, changed in the moment of the implementation of the theory with measures such as "Stop and Frisk". |
