Abstract: Connectivity is one of the most evolving technologies in the automotive industry and geolocation is one of the most remarkable possibilities. In this context, a prototype has been created using Arduino platform in order to track vehicles in real time via web through GPRS and GPS technologies. On one hand, Arduino, installed in the vehicle and using a GSM/GPRS/GPS module, gets the GPS data (latitude, longitude, day, hour, speed and number of satellites used) and sends them continuously and periodically to the database of a web server. On the other hand, through the web platform created and the use of Google Maps API, users can view the route, the real time location, the track history of the vehicle, and some variables such as the average speed or the distance travelled. Moreover, a login page allows only authorized users access to the system whose administrator also has addition functionalities. The final tests of the device in a real environment have made possible to analyse the established requirements (GPS data sampling rate, latency, discarded data and accuracy of location), to verify that Arduino can be used to develop a system like this, and to find that the exchange of real time data in the automotive world has a great potential.
