Abstract: | This paper documents the transformation of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) between 1955 and 1974, specifically in the radio field. During this period, the corporation, which since World War II had become the main cultural reference of the United Kingdom, was accused of breaching its obligations as a public service. Indeed, following the emergence and rapid spread of the pop phenomenon, the BBC had to adapt both its concept of public service and its notion of excellence to satisfy a significant part of its audience that, until then, had tried to ignore: the young. |
