Abstract: The present work is a bibliographic review that seeks to deepen into the environmental, non-genetic aspects that potentially induce obesity in immigrant people. If a few years ago, acculturation had been considered as triggering the risk of obesity, since most studies were done in immigrants from low income countries to the United States, it currently targets many other factors as responsible for this risk. The environment where immigrants live can play an important role in eating habits and lifestyles that they adopt by favoring or damaging weight gain, in the same way as adapting to an urban environment. Maintaining aspects of traditional culture can be a protective factor against overweight and obesity in some cases, but can also help increase the risk in other circumstances. The place of socialization of immigrants and their cultural beliefs and gender roles, as well as their body preferences, will shape the way in which they acquire certain eating habits and health behaviors. The socioeconomic status and degree of academic training achieved by immigrants also modulate these associations with the risk of increasing the BMI, adding vulnerability to the status of immigrant in case of being scarce, but acting in favor or against the gain weight depending on the other factors that interact with it. Likewise, stress for acculturation and eating practices that parents will use with their children as a result of this, as well as the level of language understanding of the host country, will condition the state of health and weight of their descendants and of their own.
