Abstract: This text aims to approach the theoretical work of several prominent authors in order to elaborate questions on the criticism that is currently being levelled at distance education. The consideration is made that the new technologies in education provoke varying and contradictory reactions, ranging from excessive optimism to radical distrust, with the political and ideological aspects underlying the critical positions being pointed out. The article advances the subject of teacher training as the core of this debate and the reflexive and pedagogic use of the new technological tools as one of the prime factors for the creation of processes able to respond to the needs and challenges imposed in the knowledge society.
