Title: Prevención de la obesidad infantil a través de un programa de intervención en educación nutricional en la etapa escolar

Abstract: Childhood obesity is currently a worldwide epidemic and Spain has one of the highest rates in the world. The causes of obesity can fundamentally be summarized in one; theenergy imbalance between calories consumed and spent. This is due on the one hand to the intake of products rich in calories, saturated fats and sugars and, on the other hand to the decrease in physical activity. We currently live in an obesogenic environment with a sedentary life and a diet far from the Mediterranean diet. School age and adolescence are crucial stages in which eating habits and lifestyles that will persist later in adulthood are configured, so they are the most likely to receive effective nutritional education. There are studies that confirm that nutritional education programs are effective at this level. In this study, an intervention was carried out in nutritional education and healthy habits in schoolchildren of the 5th grade of CEIP Los Albares, which consisted of five practical theoretical sessions. This intervention was able to increase the consumption of fruit and decrease that of ultraprocessed in school recesses, increase the level of adherence of the participants to the Mediterranean diet and improve the basic knowledge in nutrition of the participating students. He failed to improve the level of physical activity of children. It would be advisable to assess these results in the long term and look for strategies to maintain the effects achieved.
