Abstract: Elite athletes are subjected high training loads, which leads to a decrease in the functionality of the immune system, causing in extreme cases immunosuppression in the athlete. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out certain sports feeding and/or supplementation strategies that avoid a considerable decrease in the functionality of the immune system in the elite athlete. Sports supplements that improve the immune system include probiotics, preparations or products that contain strains of live non-pathogenic microorganisms that have benefits in the health of the host. The main objective of this Master's Thesis was to carry out a bibliographic review of the main clinical trains on the benefits of probiotic supplementation in the immune system of elite athletes. A bibliographic review has been carried out in the Pubmed, MedlinePlus and Google Scholar databases, excluding those clinical trials carried out on animals and more than 10 years ago. The results showed that probiotics have benefits in the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and diseases of the upper respiratory tract (URTI), both of high incidence in elite athletes. In addition, after the results obtained, it was also confirmed that probiotics improve innate and acquired immunity and reduce oxidative stress caused by strenuous exercise. Probiotics can be useful sports supplement to improve the immune syste in elite athletes.
