Abstract: Creatine was first discovered in 1832 and its supplementation in athletes has become popular after the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. It is currently used among recreational, college, and professional athletes as a nutri- tional supplement or ergogenic aid. Methodology, a current bibliographic review has been made about the con- sumption of creatine as a nutritional supplement in sports and its practical appli- cation from key scientific databases including Pubmed, Scielo, Elsevier, Scirus, Science direct and Medline. Results, various investigations report that the use of this supplement improves strength, maximum power and work; as well as the performance of single effort sprint exercises and in repetitive sprint exercises. It also increases fat-free mass and performance in high-intensity exercises. However, not all authors demons- trate a beneficial effect on performance, although the reason for the observed lack of ergogenic effect is sometimes not clear. It is possible that individual va- riability in response to creatine supplementation may explain the lack of ergo- genic benefit reported in these studies. Conclusions, after reviewing the scientific and medical literature, we can affirm that creatine supplementation seems safe and does not demonstrate serious health risks for athletes, and can improve exercise performance in individuals who perform sports with maximum effort and / or repetitive sprint exercises.
