Abstract: EGNOS is the European satellite based augmentation system that provides positioning corrections and integrity through GPS and Galileo. Despite the fact that EGNOS has applications in a wide range of fields, its origin, requirements and design have always been influenced by the aeronautical sector. Thereby, satellite navigation has a key role in this area and at the same time the concept of integrity is well defined and introduced into its operations. Nonetheless, there are fields with great economic weight where satellite navigation and integrity are also essential, and one of them is the maritime sector. Although EGNOS has an obvious interest in this ambit, its application is not clear, as there is not such a direct match between the requirements for integrity in ship positioning and the performance of EGNOS. In the paper developed here, it is intended to study firstly the operating principles of SBAS systems, and more in particular EGNOS. Likewise, the concept of integrity and its implementation will be presented through the different parameters that characterize it. Due to the fact that EGNOS has a close relationship with the aeronautical sector, a comparison with the parameters in that field will also be presented. In addition, the work will set out the requirements and regulations on integrity existing in the maritime sector, covering all possible operational scenarios. From the results of the previous points, a set of conclusions will be extracted on the suitability and compatibility of EGNOS with the maritime sector, since, with the new update of the EGNOS V3 system, the performance will be extended thanks to the use of dual frequency and multi constellation. Finally, a series of recommendations will be proposed regarding future modifications in regulatory matters, as well as in the development of future ship receivers, with the aim of making EGNOS contribute to the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation.
