Abstract: | Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a worldwide high prevalent disease. It's expected that T2DM prevalence will keep growing in the coming decades. When apatient is diagnosed the first line of treatment consists of nutritional and lifestyle advice, trying to control the disease and avoid medical treatment. This nutritional therapy should be individually designed depending on each patient. Different dietetic approaches can be offered to manage this condition, including those that induce nutritional ketosis (NK),like ketogenic diet (KD) or intermittent fasting (IF). General objective, to evaluate the NK impact on the glycemic control and cardiovascular risk markers in patients with T2DM. Methods, systematic review of the published articles between 2010 and 2020 related to KD and IF in patients with T2DM. After the database search, and according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 articles were obtained and further analyzed in this review. Results. The KD, compared to the calorie restriction diets (CRD), provides a better glycemic control and improvement in cardiometabolic markers, along with weight and fat mass loss, with no significant adverse effects. Likewise, the KD achieves a reduction in the antidiabetic medication. IF did not show inferiority when compared to CRD, thus, it can be considered as a CRD alternative. |
