Abstract: Almost 45 years after the democratic elections of 1977, electoral abstentionism continues to be a phenomenon that affects tens of millions of Spanish citizens. In this work we want to investigate the characteristics of this phenomenon, its relationship with political and socio-economic aspects and its effects on electoral results. Two different approaches have been used to achieve this goal. The first consists of the aggregate analysis, that is, the examination of electoral data from 1977 to 2019. In this phase, the level of electoral turnout has been analyzed, differentiating it by territorial unit and type of elections and it has been observed how the results of the elections have changed according to the level of abstention. The second approach consists of individual analysis, which is based on an examination of opinion polls where electoral behavior is related to socio-economic characteristics and political opinions. Data visualization tools and statistic tests have been used to allow the identification of significant patterns and relationships. In the aggregate analysis, it has been observed that the territorial units with the most abstention are the insular and coastal ones, and that abstentionism in the general elections benefits the Popular Party. In the individual analysis, it has been verified that having a level of primary education, an age greater than 60 years, having a negative opinion towards the political and economic situation and self-positioning towards the political center have a positive effect on abstentionism electoral.
