Title: El que no es veu, existeix. La (in)visibilitat de les cures en el registre arqueològic. Aplicació de la Bioarqueologia de les cures en els neandertals de la cova de Shanidar

Abstract: Cooperation, empathy, and altruism are human capacities that have been documented since ancient times. But these qualities, like feelings and emotions, do not leave a trace in the archaeological record, and we can only infer them from the study of the pathologies, traumatisms and injuries present in the fossils. The Bioarcheology of Care, through tools such as the Index of Care, has found the opportunity to reconstruct the social life of past populations based on the care and attention given to individuals with pathologies, injuries and / or trauma. The present work aims to assess the scope that compassion, care and attention have had within the Neanderthal world, and to demystify the nineteenth-century conception still present in the social imaginary, which defines them as beasts or animals. From the case study of the Neanderthal individual Shanidar1 from Shanidar Cave (Iraq), to which the Index of Care has been applied, it is intended to estimate the role that care and attention played in the social and symbolic dynamics of groups of Neanderthals, and making the invisible visible, see how empathy and compassion have played a key role in our evolution.
