Abstract: Semi-extensive beef cattle farming in the Pyrenees is an economic activity closely related to the territory where it is developed. The conditioning factors of this environment and the difficult competition in the beef sector itself, result in its low productivity and low competitiveness in global markets. In terms of a traditional economic evaluation, this activity would be unfeasible without the economic policies of the EU. The current capitalist model does not incorporate negative social or environmental externalities, works on the basis of a financialized economy and has abandoned many of the values that define a society. The Economy of the Common Good model proposes that the objective of the economy returns to its essence and that, above competition and the maximization of benefits, prioritize maximizing the common good, cooperation, and the will of the democratic countries manifested in their Constitutions. This paper analyses the viability of semi-extensive beef cattle farming in the Pyrenees from the perspective of the ECG, giving value to its ethical, social, environmental, legal and political implications. This cattle farming activity has an important contribution to the common good compared to other production systems. In comparison, it provides healthier food which is produced in an ecological and sustainable way and contributes to the conservation of the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the Pyrenees, represented in the current paper for the Alta Ribagorça region. The conclusion is that in a market where differentiated products are competed according to their contribution to the common good, where prices incorporate social and environmental impacts and consequences, and where the utility of ethical and sustainable goods and services are legally favoured, this economic activity would be considered not only necessary, but economically viable.
