Abstract: | Patient presentation: the case of a 7-year-old man with a history of prematurity (gestational age 28 weeks) and learning difficulties, immature behavior and emotional problems is presented. Description of the pathology: newborns with a gestational age less than 37 weeks are considered premature. The prevalence is 5-18% of newborns, the average mortality of these is 6%. Prematurity is a global problem; has maternal, fetal, or iatrogenic causes; and associated complications are the leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age. It is associated with a higher risk of presenting lower general cognitive performance, neurodevelopmental, learning and behavioral disorders and poorer psychosocial adjustment. Evaluation results: the patient presents normal general cognitive performance and attentional and executive difficulties that condition academic learning and generate emotional repercussions. The results are consistent with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a specific learning disorder. Objective of the intervention: stimulate executive functions and implement external aids with the general objective of optimizing their functioning in academic and family settings. Description of the intervention: a rehabilitation program of 2 weekly sessions for 6 months is proposed. Altered functions (verbal working memory, organization, cognitive flexibility, behavioral and emotional regulation) are worked on with computerized and paper games, self-instructions and mindfulness exercises. Special emphasis is placed on the ecological validity of the intervention, the generalization of learning and the involvement of the family. |
