Title: Velocitat i acceleració: una mirada a partir de la modernitat
Author: Rifà Llimós, Pol
Tutor: Sánchez Flores, Txuma
Abstract: This article aims to think modernity and postmodernity from two concepts: velocity and acceleration. The technical advances of the 19th and 20th centuries contributed to generate new forms of perception, at the same time as a conception of time based on progress was spread. Movement and velocity were two principles in modernity that sought to guide the course of history towards the future. However, confidence in technique and the exaltation of speed, went into crisis with the effects of the World War II. From the 90s onwards, the modern idea of velocity was nuanced with the accelerationist theory. In this case, acceleration refers to an intensification of the dynamics of the capitalist system, reinforcing the immanence of the social and technological. For accelerationism, the construction of the future involves rejecting catastrophic imaginaries and re-appropriating contemporary technological potential. This article aims to propose the continuities and discontinuities between modernity -with the idea of progress- and postmodernity -with the idea of accelerationism- in order to contrast two interpretations of temporality and the future.
