Abstract: This study explores if spiritual, religious and secular practices, like meditation and prayer, are related to anxiety levels and mental health. The main issue of this research is to know the usefulness of meditation in relation to the boom (popularity) of its use as a therapy in the field of psychology. For this, it was applied the analytical cross-sectional ex post facto design with no equivalent control group. Thus, it has been supplying an online questionnaire to 92 participants of 18 to 76 years old, from nine countries of Europe and America. The results indicate that people who meditate have higher levels of anxiety than people who pray, including the control group. In contrast, the people that pray shows lower levels of anxiety compared to the rest of the group. In addition, it has been found that people, who value "important" or "very important" the act of praying in their lives, have significantly lower levels of anxiety. This study has limitations since the sample, although sufficient, is small for all the variables that have been intended to study. The results obtained provide shared conclusions and discrepancies with previous studies.
