Abstract: | The following end-of-degree project involves the development of a very short visual novel, an interactive video game genre featuring text-based narrative. In this project, the narrative aims to arouse empathy towards people suffering from psychological illnesses. The visual novel is characterized by the use of static images. Characters and scenarios are illustrations to which certain basic transformations can be applied if relevant to the narrative. That is why the development of this project differentiates three major tasks within the phases: ideation, illustration and programming. The pre-production phase prepares the narrative with the different scripts and develops the initial designs. The production phase consists on the scenarios, characters and spaces drawing, those will construct the visual novel with the help of Ren'Py, the free software engine specialized in the genre. In this phase, there's also programming in the engine's-based language, Python and Pygame; and there's the adaptation of audios as well, to make them fit with the atmospheric setting. In the post-production phase, the text is translated into different languages to make it more accessible to the public, the visual novel is exported for the 3 SO (Windows, Mac and Linux) and finally published on the independent videogame platform itch.io. The resulting product of this project is a globally available visual novel, with a quiet but engrossing narrative, with about 10-15 minutes long gameplay per route that can conclude with one of the four available endings. |
