Author: Salorta Arbona, María

Abstract: Introduction: There is growing scientific evidence showing the relationship between maternal psychopathology and alterations in mother-infant relationships and in the psycho-affective development of children. Maternal representations and prenatal bonding have been described as having a significant influence. In this context, the aim of this review is to summarize information on the influence that the presence of perinatal psychopathology may have on maternal representations and prenatal bonding. Methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO and Web of Science. Results: The included studies demonstrate that the presence of perinatal mental disorders alter maternal representations and prenatal bonding. Conclusions: Finally, we conclude that maternal mental health care deserves special attention through specific programs integrated in the health system that allow early detection of bonding difficulties and the establishment of psychological interventions to prevent alterations in maternal-filial relationships.
