Las Periodistas Paramos in Spain: Professional, feminist Internet activism

Abstract

Este artículo analiza cómo surge y se desarrolla el grupo "Las Periodistas Paramos", dentro del contexto de huelga feminista del 8 de marzo de 2018 en España. Esta iniciativa, creada por un grupo de profesionales, pretende conseguir firmas para un manifiesto con un acuerdo de mínimos que exponga y denuncie la situación de las periodistas en el país. Sin embargo, el uso de tecnologías específicas y de redes feministas provoca cambios en sus primeros planes y se proyectan fines más ambiciosos. El objetivo de esta investigación es conocer cómo se inicia esta comunidad, su tipología, analizar la selección de las herramientas digitales en el proceso, cómo se coordinan intereses y aprendizajes, y concretar las fortalezas y debilidades del grupo según las experiencias de las participantes. A partir de una triangulación de metodologías cualitativas, como entrevista, observación no participante y focus group, se concretan sus dinámicas de trabajo colectivo y su evolución.

This article analyses how the group Las Periodistas Paramos (We the Women Journalists Stop) arose and developed within the context of the feminist strike that took place in Spain on 8 March 2018 (8M). The purpose of this research is to understand how this community began and its typology, to analyse the selection of digital tools in the process and to outline the strengths and weaknesses of the group on the basis of participants' experiences. Using three qualitative methods, specifically an interview, non-participant observation and focus groups, the group's collective work dynamics and its evolution are defined. The results obtained show that this is a community of interest that has collaboratively broadened its initial objectives, surmounted ideological differences, contributed to the feminist movement and grown exponentially by expanding its activities to embrace other Spanish cities and foreign correspondents.
