Abstract: Patient presentation, we present the case of a 37-year-old man with intellectual disability due to West syndrome encephalopathy, who shows learning difficulties and moderate-severe deficits in most cognitive processes, especially in executive functions. Description of the pathology. West syndrome (WS) is a type of encephalopathy that begins in infancy or childhood with a prenatal, perinatal or postnatal cause and is characterized by epileptic spasms, delayed psychomotor development and hisparrhythmic patterns in EEG. The starting aget is usually between 3 and 12 months, with an incidence between 4 and 6 months. The current incidence is 1 every 2,000-4,000 live births and slightly predominates in men (1.5 to 1 compared to women). Main results of the evaluation: the patient presents an altered general cognitive performance with attentional and executive difficulties that limit the development of other cognitive processes and produce behavioral and adaptation problems. Objective of the intervention. To improve executive functions through a cognitive stimulation program with rehabilitation exercises based on the restoration and compensation of the functions that present deficits. Description of the intervention: a rehabilitation program of 2 weekly sessions of approximately 1 hour for 6 months is presented. The affected functions (inhibitory control, behavioral self-regulation, mental flexibility, planning and organization, decision making, working memory, attention, social cognition and personal autonomy) are stimulated with computerized and paper-based exercises.
