Title: La Romanització de l’Urgellet i Andorra
Author: Valera Barros, Joaquim
Tutor: Olesti Vila, Oriol
Abstract: The region of Urgellet and Andorra form part of an ancient historical country, today separated by a border. The Seu d'Urgell plain has been traditionally the epicenter of this territory, a crossroads of ancient paths wich communicated with Cerdanya to the east, Pallars to the west, the Andorran valleys to the north, and to the south: the valleys of Cabó, Alinyà and Nargó. Even so, the two main communication ways were the Cardoner road, which connected the country with central Catalonia, and the Strata Ceretana, which from the headwaters of the Segre descended towards the city of Ilerda. Both ways were reused and improved by the Romans when they conquered the territory. The population indigenous was subjected to a slow but effective process of acculturation, which ended up forging a Romanized territory, both culturally and linguistically. However, the significant number of preserved pre-Roman toponyms has raised the possibility of a linguistic-cultural survival of the indigenous substratum previous to the arrival of Rome. In this work, we will analyze the sources and archaeological evidences that we have at the moment, to finish exposing the future potentialities of study.
