Abstract: Depressive disorders are prevalent psychiatric disorders, with an estimated 300 million people worldwide suffering depression, 4.4% of our planet's population. Pharmacological and psychobehavioral treatment has been the traditional approach for many years.Another area of treatment and target of this review is to know the relationship between the gut microbiota and the behavior of the host, mental disorders and specifically in depression. The gut microbiota is defined as a community of living microorganisms that are present as a diverse ecosystem in the digestive tract. At present, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the functions of the digestive system are not limited to the structure itself, the gut microbiota functions as another organ, perfectly integrated and enhancing the homeostasis of the host. The use of probiotic supplementation is considered one of the most important tools for modifying the composition of the microbiota and influencing in the so called gut-brain axis, a system that includes the central nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system and adrenal pituitary hypothalamic axis. Signals from the gut system are transmitted through the enteric, spinal, and vagal pathways to the brain and vice versa. To investigate of evidence of the use of probiotics in the treatment of depression, the current bibliographic review is carried out with the search for randomized clinical studies that evaluate the improvement of depressive symptoms with a controlled probiotic intervention. Although the results differ from one study to another, we find that most of them show an improvement in the scales for measuring depressive symptoms. Further studies are needed to deepen the knowledge of the potential beneficial effect of probiotics on an individual's health.
