Title: El Antropoceno y Naturgemälde: La concepción naturalista de von Humboldt analizada desde la fotografía del Chimborazo
Author: Sarango Espinosa, Sergio
Tutor: Gil Farrero, Judit
Abstract: This work is a philosophical, historical and artistic journey that investigates about climate change, specifically from the analysis of factors that compromise the change in vegetation and the melting of the snow-capped volcano Chimborazo in Ecuador. At the beginning of the 19th century, von Humboldt used this volcano to carry out studies that, very early on, already attributed the relationship of living organisms and their possible changes with the human footprint. He made what could be the first infographic in history with an engraving of Chimborazo, where he locates the different flora and fauna in its corresponding height, after having ascended this volcano. He called the engraving "Naturgemälde". This research ontologizes the environmental problematic from the aesthetics, and, in this way, to recognize the environmental impact in the Anthropocene also means to distinguish the need to combine a multidisciplinary perspective that not only denounces the environmental problems, but also generates proposals for solutions based on different activisms to address the complex challenges of the present time. Nature in this work is written with a capital letter, this alludes to the treatment of the word by the philosopher Timothy Morton, since it is thought of as something of anthropogenic use, contrary to ecology, since it contains qualities, in the words of the author "unnatural" and is constructed in philosophical, psychic and social spaces.
