Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze and compile the psycho-emotional effects that people with low income and/or in a poverty situation are exposed to, identifying those expressions, behaviors and manifestations that cause internalization, affecting the degree of self-worth and the perception of control over their lives. The impact of the media as an instrument for the dissemination and transmission of social values and beliefs, the psychological and affective discomfort of people experiencing poverty, the discriminatory and internalizing expressions towards the poor, the position and role of the poor in society and the influence of social policies are analyzed in relation to the objective of the study. This study is based on the perspective of Social Constructionism, Social Interactionism within Social Psychology, in which the concepts of perceived self-efficacy, locus of control, and learned helplessness are analyzed. The participants of the sample of this exploratory and mixed research with a cross-sectional design consisted of 14 individuals directly and/or indirectly related to the third social sector in relation to this economically vulnerable social sector. The techniques used for this study were a semi-structured interview and a questionnaire with closed questions. The conclusions show that the problem of poverty generally affects the psychosocial, psychoaffective and mental health dimensions, and that participants believe that people living in poverty have low self-esteem and external locus of control. Another conclusion is that internalizing verbalizations are normalized in a generalizing way in all social spaces, making it more difficult to overcome poverty.
