Abstract: While the exact advantages and obstacles presented by different work models remain up for debate, the recent acceleration of telework in companies due to the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the amount of people affected by a change in work model; magnifying the urgency to investigate the various styles and techniques employed in the implementation of different telework models in order to identify management strategies that minimize the obstacles and risks that may be involved in transferring work responsibilities from the office to a domestic space. More investigation is needed regarding how organizations view telework once it has been implemented; and the different control and performance tools employed by organizations to monitor their remote employees’ presence and performance. This study aims to identify organizational, professional, personal and family transformations involved with changing to a remote work model, documenting experiences and stories from people who telework or manage teleworkers so as to obtain qualitative examples of any adaptations, traits or skills that contributed to successful and comfortable telework. With these goals in mind, this study analyzes the transcripts of 13 qualitative interviews carried out with teleworkers of different ages and industries; 7 of which have experience in managing teleworkers. Results seem to support a hybrid model while at the same time underlining that the values of an organization seem to remain intact despite a change in model; where a transformation to telework does not automatically imply flexibility, independence or a solution to systemic problems such as gender or class discrimination. Additionally, the advantages of remote work models can be subjective and vary according to personal traits and digital competencies when taking advantage of the new tools provided by telework – while the question as to where the responsibility lies to impart or develop these skills that ensure a good implementation of telework remains open.
