Abstract: The Challenge of Bordeaux, scheduled for June 1, 1283, involving the King of Sicily and Naples, Charles of Anjou, and King Peter II of Catalonia and II of Aragon, fighting for the throne of Sicily, was undoubtedly one of the most important challenges in medieval history. This episode appears in the Chronicle written by Bernat Desclot between 1283 and 1288. The Challenge of Bordeaux is a tournament that was to be held between knights of the kingdom of France and Catalonia, who fought for hegemony in the European context. The event was centuries later staged in Curial e Güelfa, by an anonymous author, one of the most important 15th century novels of chivalry in Catalan medieval literature: the main characters are Curial, born into a poor family, and Güelfa, a young widow who is in love with him and who protects him so that he will ascend; the novel explains his personal evolution to become one of the best knights of the kingdom. It is interesting to note that, although Curial e Güelfa is a novel set in the 13th century, the protagonist is a hero of the 15th century. The Curial e Güelfa is related, due to its similarities and verisimilitudes, to the description of one of the most important episodes of the Chronicle written by Bernat Desclot, which narrates the events of the King of Bordeaux's Challenge; but it is especially related to the historical recreation of what this combat could have been, if it had finally taken place. In this work we will focus on the most important aspects of the story, in a context in which Catalonia, geographically, dominated important strategic points in a turbulent Mediterranean.
