Abstract: Self-concept has been a widely studied variable in the academic and educational context academic and educational context. Numerous are the studies that relate self-concept, especially its academic dimension, with academic performance in the different educational stages. However, this variable has not been so far taken into account as a possible predictor of the risk of absenteeism and early school leaving. It is to be expected that a deteriorated global and/or academic self-concept will entail a greater risk of disengagement from learning and the educational system, leading to absenteeism and, if this becomes chronic, also to poor academic results, grade repetition, disengagement and dropping out of school. The present study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the degree of self-concept, both globally and more specifically academically, and truancy measured in terms of the number of absences registered in 2nd year ESO students at a public secondary school in the district of Sant Martí, in the city of Barcelona.
