Abstract: Minerals and vitamins are essential micronutrients for the proper functioning of many vital processes. In athletes, they are involved in the use of energy, protein metabolism, muscle contraction, etc. Particularly iodine, selenium and vitamin D participate in immunity. Currently, it is not recommended to supplement these or other micronutrients in athletes, except in particular cases and previous deficiencies, such as the general recommendation to use iodized salt to avoid a lack of this mineral. However, most of these recommendations are based on old population data, are not specific for athletes and mostly come from other regions, with different geography and dietary customs. On the spanish atlantic coast, specifically the south of Galicia, predominates a diet rich in fish, shellfish and dairy products; also, the hours of sunshine are higher than the spanish average; nevertheless, there are no studies that measure the status of iodine, selenium and vitamin D in athletes; only urinary iodine (ioduria) has been measured in the general population, more than 20 years ago. The YoSeDe-Galicia project seeks to know the current nutritional status of these micronutrients through a prospective, observational, population study that will be carried out in 4000 healthy adults, half of them athletes. The ioduria, serum Selenium, Selenoprotein P and serum 25-hydroxyVitamin D, will be measured. A dietary survey will be usefull to discover consumption patterns and the use of supplements in this population, in order to assess the need to continue recommending salt iodization, at least in this region of the country.
