Title: Neuromodulación no invasiva para reducir los déficits sociales en población autista. Una revisión sistemática

Abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with two core syndromic features: deficits in communication and social interaction, and restrictive and repetitive behavior patterns. The usual therapeutic approach is carried out through cognitive and cognitive-behavioral techniques, which require long periods of time to get results, as well as a high economic cost. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques are currently presented as a novel, potentially more efficient and, ultimately, complementary approach. This review collects the evidence of the use of these techniques in the autistic population. 283 papers were found through PubMed, Scopus and WOS, of which 16 met the established inclusion criteria. Eight of the studies used the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation paradigm, and another eight the Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation paradigm. Improvements were found in the social domains using both techniques, without any of them clearly showing better results than the other. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was the most frequently stimulated area (75%). The results suggest that NIBS may be an adequate therapeutic approach to treat social deficits in the autistic population. However, the heterogeneity of the methodology used, as well as the biases of some studies, mean that the conclusions derived from the reviewed works should be taken with caution, highlighting the need for future research with standardized protocols in clinically well-characterized samples that allow the establishment of efficient and effective therapeutic procedures.
