Abstract: | The research was developed on a stratified sample of 410 students from higher education institutions located in Barinas, Venezuela. These represent a combined population of approximately 26,400 undergraduate college students. The aim of the study was to compare the Internet use patterns for academic purposes of Barineses students with those of their American peers, as well as the ICT skills of Barinese students with those of their European peers. The relationships between the use of ICT for educational purposes, ICT skills and academic performance were also analysed. The findings tend to confirm the hypothesis of the existence of an educational gap between local and American university students; and the non-existence of a digital divide between the former and European university students. Additionally, the significant influence of various indicators in the ICT skills index on the academic performance of Barineses university students was revealed. |
