Abstract: Radio frequency identification or RFID, is a technique that allows information to be transmitted at a distance thanks to a smart label attached to a product that stores coded data and sends it via radio frequency waves to an external reader. In the library field, RFID allows the user to borrow documents independently, without the intervention of library staff, hence the need to evaluate the effects of RFID on users, professionals and the documentary collection. It is a technological improvement that is recommended to be installed in all new library facilities however, its suitability must be considered in small facilities or with little movement of people. This research analyzes the reasons and results of the implementation of RFID radiofrequency as a technological tool in libraries and bookmobiles. Specifically, four library facilities located in the Anoia region are studied (Vilanova del Camí, Igualada, Santa Margarida de Montbui y el Bibliobús Montserrat que circula por los municipios sin biblioteca). RFID allows many functionalities and improvements in library services, but this study focuses on the loan service (service most used by users), and also on collection control. • Are users satisfied? Has the loan service improved since the self-loan machines have been installed? • And the professionals? Have RFID and self-loan machines been perceived as an improvement? Has automation changed their role? • Is the documentary collection (books, CDs, DVDs, magazines...) now more protected and controlled? This is a relatively new study in the library context of the demarcation of Barcelona and in all libraries in Catalonia. The introduction of RFId is meant to bring positive effects but it is necessary to assess the risks and undesirable effects. Focusing on some municipalities will allow applying it to other library contexts as a guideline.
