Title: Análisis económico-financiero de Mercadona, S.A. (2017-2021)

Abstract: By analysing Mercadona’s financial statements for the period 2017-2121, along with those of its direct competitors and the main indicators of the sector in which it operates, the aim is to answer the following question: How has the coronavirus crisis impacted Mercadona’s annual accounts for the years 2020 and 2021? Mercadona holds a prominent position in the Spanish economy and has a solid position in the food retail distribution market. The company presents a good economic and financial situation: its turnover has experienced constant growth throughout the period 2017-2021 and it has good liquidity and financial solvency despite the significant investment effort it made during the period analysed for the implementation of its 2018-2023 transformation plan and its response to the different circumstances that arose during that period. However, despite its market leadership, Mercadona is not the most profitable company in the food retail sector. In 2020, despite the challenging working conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company responded effectively and efficiently to the increase in demand in the first months of the pandemic and achieved the highest profit in its history. By contrast, in 2021, higher raw material, electricity and transport costs had a negative impact on the company's margins and caused its annual profits to shrink, as well as highlighting its greater vulnerability to cost increases compared to its direct competitors. Following the sectorial comparison, a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis of Mercadona is conducted. Additionally, the report examines the most relevant ethical and social implications associated with the company's activities. Finally, the report presents the main recommendations derived from the SWOT analysis, as well as the future prospects of the company.
