Abstract: Writing serves as an affirmation of one’s own voice and memory. At the end of the 20th century, two women writers from both sides of the Mediterranean created two collections of three books about their histories and women’s history. Assia Djebar (French Algeria, 1936 - Paris, 2015) and Montserrat Roig (Barcelona, 1946 - 1991) exemplify the role of a literary women writer involved in the historical and political changes women were living in their territories at the end of the 20th century. From this point, we follow the path already observed by historiographers between literature, history, memory and identity. Then, we study the historical past of Mediterranean women during these decades in order to comparatively analyze both literary accounts of the past. Finally, based on this framework, we observe how contemporary women writers give testimony of the construction of women’s own voice in the Western Mediterranean at the turn of the present century.
