Title: Alimentación de la sociedad en Asturias: pasado y presente
Author: Cárcaba González, Isabel
Tutor: Vázquez-Medina, José Antonio
Abstract: During the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period, Asturian society saw its nutritional and health status conditioned by the lack of food, its poor quality and low nutritional value. In urban areas there was a shortage while in rural areas they fed on what they produced through agricultural and livestock activities, both situations reflect different eating patterns of the time. In contrast to this situation, in the 21st century, diet is no longer influenced by food scarcity, but now we are basing our diet on an overabundance of food which results in excess calories along with a lower energy expenditure. This situation is even more pronounced in Asturias, where the consumption of all food groups is higher than the national average. In this study, a comparison between the eating patterns of those conditioned by famine and based on subsistence, and the current ones, conditioned by abundance and based in many cases on the mere pleasure of eating has been made. It has been found that young people have stopped consuming natural, fresh and local products, and are currently opting for processed products, fast food establishments, and the consumption of snacks between meals. Finally, it is important to stress the need to carry out nutritional education campaigns among young people and the urgency of carrying out similar studies that relate the experiences of society during the war and/or post-war period are highlighted.
