Abstract: In February 2020, Sinn Féin emerged as the most voted force in the Republic of Ireland’s parliamentary elections, leaving behind years of political marginalisation and institutional ostracism as a result of its historical association with IRA terrorist group. This exceptional moment is not an isolated event, but part of a populist upsurge that can be observed across the European continent. In this study, in order to understand the reason behind the excepcionality of these elections, we analyse the Irish electoral scenario of the last 20 years (coinciding with the cessation of the IRA’s armed struggle in the Good Friday Agreements) and highlight how the age period and cohort have been decisive in this shift that has put an end to more of one hundred years of the “two-and-a-half-party” system on the island. This project has been carried out through the study of polls, demonstrating how the move out of the traditional niche of voters and the extension of the area of electoral influence over the years has allowed the Sinn Féin to obtain its best results since 1922.
