Abstract: Reforming the research assessment model is a current scientific and political issue. Over the past few years, problems in the use of the impact factor as well as the existence of different biases have led to a debate about the need to change to a new model, a change that is currently possible thanks to the steps taken by the different stakeholders, mainly quality agencies, but also the legal and policy changes in relation to the paradigm of open science. This article focuses the discussion in Spain and describes some of the main problems of the current model, as well as best practices that can be used as references, both quantitative and qualitative. In turn, there are elements that can be considered to chart a realistic path in the proposal of the new evaluation model.
