Observación sindrómica. Gestión de la vida en el siglo XXI

Abstract

El presente trabajo es un extracto-resumen de la tesis doctoral que defendí el pa-sado septiembre titulada Seguridad y Vigilancia. Gestión de la Vida en el Siglo XXI,enmarcada en un marco teórico que mezcla los Estudios Sociales de la Ciencia y laTecnología, la Teoría del Actor-Red y otros conceptos de la filosofía, la antropolo-gía y la sociología. Desde una metodología cualitativa, utilizando un estudio decaso centrado en el análisis semiótico-material de la bioseguridad y la biovigilan-cia en la Unión Europea, ofrezco un repaso del concepto de biopolítica indicandola obsolescencia del mismo y su insuficiencia para dar cuenta de los eventos ocu-rridos durante los primeros años del siglo XXI. Por este motivo, en este artículocompilo el concepto central de la tesis: la observación sindrómica, exponiendotanto el campo donde se origina como los motivos que me han llevado a acuñarlocomo una mejor respuesta que la biopolítica como herramienta para analizarcómo la vida es gestionada contemporáneamente.

The present work is an extract-summary of the doctoral thesis I defended lastSeptember entitled Security and Surveillance. Management of Life in the 21st Cen-tury, framed in a theoretical framework that mixes the Social Studies of Scienceand Technology, the Theory of the Actor-Network and other concepts from philo-sophy, anthropology and sociology. From a qualitative methodology, using a casestudy focused on the semiotic-material analysis of biosecurity and biomonitoringin the European Union, I offer a review of the concept of biopolitics indicating itsobsolescence and its insufficiency to take account for the events that have oc-curred since the first years of the 21st century. For this reason, in this article Icompile the central concept of the thesis: syndromic observation, exposing boththe field where it originates and the reasons which led me to coin it as a better an-swer than biopolitics as a tool to analyze how life is managed contemporarily.
