Title: Efectos de la suplementación en la prevención y tratamiento de lesiones musculoesqueléticas en corredores de resistencia

Abstract: Athletics is one of the most popular sports around the world. In the last years, the number of runners has increased, with foot racing being one of the sports most practiced by the Spanish people. Running provides countless health benefits, but, unfortunately, it is also associated with a high risk of injuries, especially in the lower extremities, with longdistance runners having the highest injury rate. Most injuries are caused by overuse of musculoskeletal structures. Although injuries are inevitable, there are nutritional strategies that can be implemented to reduce their incidence and reduce recovery time, as well as benefit the rehabilitation process. A proper balance of nutrients, as well as sufficient energy availability and diets high in protein and carbohydrates, are essential. Therefore, the objective of this work was focused on the implementation of nutritional and supplementation measures that help prevent musculoskeletal injuries in endurance athletes. According to the literature consulted, increasing protein in the diet can alleviate markers of muscle damage, helping in treatment after an injury. Lipids are also of great importance in the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries, especially omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, due to their anti-inflammatory properties. On the other hand, it is not uncommon for runners to present deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D and iron, so supplementation can help avoid injuries.
