Abstract: The expressive function of music in Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) is crucial for understanding the audiovisual product in all its magnitude. However, there are currently no effective and standardized guidelines for its description in the Spanish guideline for SDH, UNE 153010 (AENOR, 2012), resulting in a subjective and optional transfer to SDH. The objective of this work is to develop guidelines for the classification of the expressive function of music in films adapted to SDH. To achieve this, on one hand, the guidelines of the UNE standard, Netflix, and the BBC for SDH have been analyzed, along with studies on the reception of deaf and hard of hearing individuals. The aim is to find consensus transcription guidelines that best suit the Spanish audience. On the other hand, a corpus has been created with expressive indications from music theory to identify the basic emotions associated with the leitmotiv of music in three blockbusters films. Although it would need to be investigated experimentally, it has been observed that the expression of music is barely conveyed in SDH. If implemented, the expression of music could generate significant benefits not only for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals but also economically for the audiovisual, electronic, and artificial intelligence-based technological sectors, and services related to film and music. This is because deaf individuals would be more engaged in consuming audiovisual material related to music if they had access to it through other sensory channels. Furthermore, the proposal presented in this study could be a good starting point to address this limitation in the UNE 153010 guideline and to meet the objectives of the rights to full access to cultural activities set out by the World Health Organization and the 2030 Agenda.
