Abstract: In the final decades of the reign of Isabel II, the Real Academia de Arqueología y Geografía del Príncipe Alfonso (RAAGPA) developed a work for disseminating archaeological research in competition with the Real Academia de la Historia, institution that defined the narrative discourse of the History of Spain in conjunction with the Higher Diplomatic School, defending the principles of the territorial, political and linguistic unity of Spain since the Middle Ages and the latter added concept of the weight of Christianity in the development of the Spanish monarchy and its social prestige. The RAAGPA, influenced deeply on the Court and after the Concordat of 1852, period of political upheaval between conservatives and liberals that led to the Revolution of 1868, carried out an important political activity defining the role of the Catholic Church in the support of the monarchy. In January 1867, two years after the death of Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman, José Pulido y Espinosa, Professor of Sacred Archaeology at the RAAGPA, delivered a speech in his honour to present his figure and books not in connection with archaeological research, but to emphasize the significance of conservatism in the Catholic religion as an essential element of stability in a political system based on traditional values, a clear declaration of support for the reign of Isabel II.
