Abstract: Various international, national and regional mandates underline the need to create inclusive schools where all students can be, participate and progress. One of the groups facing major barriers in this regard is students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This cross-sectional study aims to examine the actual and self-perceived knowledge of secondary education teachers about ASD, as well as possible influencing variables (gender, teaching specialization, specific training or previous experience). Intentional sampling was used and a total of 33 Spanish teachers participated, completing online a demographic questionnaire and an adapted version of Autism Knowledge Questionnaire (AKQ). Descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation test and Fisher’s exact test were used to analyse the data. The results showed that the majority of secondary education teachers had a sufficient or good level of knowledge about ASD, although their actual knowledge did not correspond to their self-perceived knowledge. Likewise, the results revealed that actual knowledge about these disorders was not influenced by gender, teaching specialization, specific training or previous experience. These findings provide a solid foundation for planning and implementing improvements in initial and ongoing teacher training, although further research is needed to confirm and clarify the results obtained.
