Title: Darwin y el liberalismo económico: de la competencia a la cooperación. Selección natural vs. simbiogénesis

Abstract: The publication of The Origin of Species marked a milestone in the history of humanity. It was a further step in that disenchantment of the world later spoken of by Weber, another rung to abandon the anthropocentric conceptions that had dominated until then. According to a widely disseminated traditional view, Darwin would be on par with Copernicus in this regard. The British naturalist would have inaugurated a new era in which human beings would not be a nearly divine being, created in the image and likeness of God, but rather an organism within nature. A being with quantitative differences, but not qualitative, compared to other animals. However, Darwinism eventually prevailed in a relatively short period, within a few decades. How was this possible in such a brief period of time? There is the possibility that the new ideas put forth by Darwin were not so novel. What we will argue in this Master's thesis is the thesis that the theory of evolution is not the result of spontaneous generation; on the contrary, the ideas presented by Darwin are deeply rooted and related to the era in which they were conceived, specifically with economic liberalism. Adam Smith's "invisible hand" would have its reflection in Darwin's "natural selection." We will also explain how evolution is a widely accepted scientific fact, unlike natural selection. The latter is connected to "competition" and "the struggle for existence." In relation to these concepts, there is social Darwinism that has led to disastrous consequences. We will also explore another proposal different from natural selection to explain evolution, which is not based on "competition" but on cooperation. This is the case of Margulis' endosymbiotic theory."
