Abstract: Currently, information disorders have become one of the greatest concerns for democratic countries. In a context of ideological polarization, disinformation is primarily used within new technologies and social media to distort public debate for the benefit of economic or political interests, as well as to weaken the credibility of institutions and media outlets. Disinformation, in all its forms, thus stands as one of the main challenges facing the journalistic profession today, especially when it comes to verifying political discourse in an environment where misleading information reaches the public in a massive and immediate way. In response to this, fact-checking agencies have emerged to analyze statements and determine their veracity, particularly in one of the most significant scenarios within democratic processes: electoral debates. In Spain, the ‘face-to-face’ debate organized by Atresmedia between the candidates for the presidency of the Government, Pedro Sánchez (PSOE) and Alberto Núñez Feijóo (PP), sparked criticism for allowing the candidates to share some data that fact-checkers ultimately classified as misleading or false after the debate. This event has once again raised the question of what role journalists should play in moderating these encounters. This research aims to determine the impact of fact-checking and highlight the need to establish new verification methods and the role that journalism plays in them, at a time when the public is particularly concerned about disinformation in the political sphere.
