Author: Martín González, Mabel

Abstract: The project was born with the purpose of finding out if people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be beneficial to the business community. It is carried out through exhaustive bibliographic research, and an empirical study based on a survey of a sample of 250 people, and two interviews with professionals in the educational sector specialized in Transition to Adulthood (TVA). The study collects information on the different aspects of the disorder, their situation in the current labor market, factors that limit their labor inclusion, and their extraordinary abilities. The results show the limited information and widespread ignorance that exists about ASD in adults, and their high unemployment figures show a clear violation of their fundamental rights, making them one of the groups with the highest risk of labor exclusion. It also includes a series of strategies and good business practices that can promote their inclusion in the workplace, taking into account both their social and communication problems, as well as their extraordinary abilities for the world of work. The recognition of their own abilities, the adaptation of jobs and supported employment stand out as relevant tools to improve their precarious employment situation. The research is based on the idea of promoting the labor inclusion of people with ASD through HR, however, this is only a small piece of the broad puzzle of factors that equally influence its achievement, as well as the society, education, companies, or public policies. It concludes that there is still a lot of work to do, and that we must continue fighting to create social awareness and make effective their fundamental right to employment, and that, in addition, they are considered a great competitive advantaºge for organizations.
