Abstract: Robert Smithson's work is characterised by his interest in geological and industrial processes affecting the landscape. He is the artist whose work is most closely related, conceptually and operatively, to mining. Smithson conceives the world based on the principles of thermodynamics, the formation of minerals and geology: the laws of physics established in the mid-19th century on which the mining and iron industries are based. But his work coincides with the beginning of one of the most far-reaching scientific revolutions of the 20th century: the renewal of thermodynamics, which would lead to the theory of unbalanced systems, the discovery of fractals as a model for natural objects and the theory of self-organised critical states. This article presents two parallel and interlinked aspects: Smithson's work related to geophysics and the mining industry, and the development since the '60s of scientific research into the dynamic systems and the self-organisation processes of matter: complexity theory. In tune with the great questions of his time, Smithson developed projects taking the principles of the dynamics of matter, the aggregation of heterogeneous materials and the topology of unbalanced geological formations to the limit. Analysing his work using complexity theory makes it possible to understand the way in which Smithson's projects were radically innovative and ahead of their time: a bold attempt to construct a critical landscape through art. This article summarises various parts of a book with the same title which will be published in Brazil at the beginning of 2010.
